We are a family business, and have been based in Caversham for over 40 years. We were founded by Dennis Roberts in the early 1970s, initially as Dennis Roberts Hire Ltd and Dennis Roberts Ltd. Dennis' wife Jean worked alongside him, managing all of the financial aspects of what she describes as "a proper Mama and Papa business."
Dennis started by hiring out and servicing water jetting machines from the family home. As the business grew, he bought a new premises in School Lane, Caversham, enabling him to grow both the hire fleet and servicing sides of the business considerably.
Nick Roberts, Dennis and Jean's son, joined the business at 23, having completed his apprenticeship. With Nick's talent for engineering, they began manufacturing their own water jetting machines. From the very beginning, Nick's knowledge and innovative spirit meant that Robojet water jetting machines have always been of exceptionally high quality.
Dennis and Jean were devoted to the business, forgoing holidays for 15 years and always bringing work home. Dennis was a true entrepreneur, seeking opportunities everywhere he went, and constantly diversifying. When Dennis and Jean retired at the ages of 71 and 70 respectively, the business was taken forward by their son Nick and John Worsfold, who had worked for them as a salesman some years previously.
By 2004, with customer demand outstripping capacity, Tim Sharples was recruited as an engineer. Inspired by his father David, who taught him how to build and modify cars, from an early age Tim was fascinated by engines. After his apprenticeship, he built racing cars for a well known racing driver, Phil Keen. Over the years, his restoration work on high-performance cars has regularly featured in motoring publications. With Tim on board, Robojet went from strength to strength.
When Nick and John decided to take early semi-retirement in 2014 they offered Tim a Directorship, alongside Ashly Catlin, John's son in law. Ashly brings us a wealth of commercial experience, which perfectly complements Tim's technical wizardry. Nick and John remain very much involved with the business, with Nick still working alongside Tim in the workshop.
