Data Protection Training

10 June 2013

Data protection training for all staff will help to protect companies handling all types of personal information

A cost-effective e-learning course that helps employees to understand the importance of correct data handling has been launched by Cardinus Risk Management.

Data Protection Awareness is a short online training programme that is designed to teach employees how to process data correctly. It provides an understanding of the Data Protection Act 1998, including its eight guiding principles.

The course also explains the various groups of people whose personal details are protected by data protection legislation. These include employees, contractors, suppliers, temporary staff, existing and potential customers.

Jon Abbott, managing director – ergonomics and safety at Cardinus Risk Management, said, “The simple act of forwarding an email can have legal implications, so proper training is essential. Although the Data Protection Act is not new, the information environment we work in has changed dramatically over the last few years. It’s now vital that all staff understand data protection legislation and how it can affect them. Data Protection Awareness course is the quick and cost-effective way for organisations to help protect themselves and the individuals whose data they process.”

Staff who have been properly trained to handle people’s data can dramatically reduce the risk of companies falling foul of the Data Protection Act.

The valuable information provided in Data Protection Awareness will help staff to understand:

What constitutes personal and sensitive personal data and what is meant by the term ‘processing’.
The different types of people protected by the Act whose data their organisation might process.
The consequences for non-compliance as an individual or to their organisation.
What they must do as an employee.
