Defibrillators help save lives

27 April 2023

A defibrillator or AED (automated external defibrillator) can be used anywhere, by anyone, to try and save the life of a person.

The sooner an electrical shock from the defibrillator is given, the greater the chance of the person’s life being saved.

In the UK there are approximately 30,000 cardiac arrests annually [out of hospital stats 2022 BHF] and survival rates are reduced by up to 10% without CPR and defibrillation. A cardiac arrest is where the heart stops pumping blood around the body and unless treated immediately this can lead to death within minutes. Having a defibrillator onsite will provide peace of mind should the unthinkable happen.

Quills supply a variety of defibrillators and replacement batteries and pads. View some of our range below and get in touch if you require assistance selecting the right model for your workplace.

What is a defibrillator?
A defibrillators or automatic defibrillator (AED) is a compact, portable, easy to use and very effective way to increase the chances of survival for the patient. They can be used by anyone, whether or not they have had formal training. An automated defibrillator gives the person using it voice instructions and the defibrillator will not allow a shock to be given to the patient unless the person needs it.

How ofter do defibrillator batteries need to be changed?
This will vary depending on the model you have but they can range from 3-5 years and the date is from the manufacturer production date.

How often do I need to replace the defib pads?
The adhesive on defib pads typically lasts two years and pads can be bought for adults and infants or as a pack including one set of each.

The pads should have an expiry date on the back of them or you can check the defib spec if the pads are those supplied when you purchased your defibrillator.
