3D Scanning to reconstruct severely damaged parts

Recently, we were asked to scan a pair of severely damaged vintage car gearbox covers.
At some point in the past these castings had been broken into several pieces and then crudely welded back together. These left areas of the castings distorted, mismatched, with some areas missing and in other areas new ribs had been added to try to hold the assembled parts together.
An earlier attempt by another company to reconstruct them had not been successful.
We scanned the two covers and then were able to successfully reconstruct the casting forms to the original design, using our experience and the combination of the scanned data, physical measurements, and finally confirming critical dimensions with our customer.
