Leading Firm on the right tracks with Station Refurbishment

A leading galvanizing firm has played its part in Europe’s largest current construction project which will see refurbishment works commence on one of Britain’s most famous railway stations.
Wessex Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has been called upon by Dorset-based Bourne Construction Engineering to provide its specialist hot-dip galvanizing treatment to 110 tonnes of steel used in the C503 Crossrail Contract refurbishment works at Liverpool Street Station.The project will see the construction of buildings that will help facilitate the relocation of existing switchgears so that main works can progress.
Crossrail, which will provide a vital and direct connection between all of London’s business districts, linking Heathrow to the West End, Abbey Wood and Canary Wharf, will increase the city’s public transport capacity by 10%, supporting regeneration across the capital.
Richard Whiddett, Sales Manager of Wessex Galvanizers, explained: “We are thrilled to have been involved in the refurbishment of Liverpool Street Station, especially as it’s such a high profile project.
We’ve had some really positive feedback from both the contractors involved and the users of the railway station. Having partnered with Bourne Construction Engineering on a diverse range of projects, we know that they always produce original, bespoke structures and designs that are iconic to their surroundings.”
The new facilities will include a three storey substation, six electrical switch rooms, a sprinkler valve chamber, a station operations office, as well as a low-voltage signalling switch room.
Howard Cox of Bourne Construction Engineering, said: “We were very pleased to be able to get our steelwork treated locally. The robust nature of galvanizing enabled us to construct our frame in a difficult underground environment without retouching the paintwork, which saved us both time and money.”
