Stylists Make the Chop

14 November 2008

Three young Surrey stylists have popped open the champagne after becoming the first hairdressers to win the new London region Junior Art Team category at the prestigious L’Oréal Talentspotting Awards 2008.

Luke Reed, 19, Jo Thompson, 20 and Carly MacPherson, 22 from Good Salon Guide Five Star salon Hair Advice Centre, Englefield Green, fought off stiff competition from across London and the South East to win the category that was introduced to the awards for the first time this year.

After submitting a themed mood board showcasing their inspirations at the initial entry stage, the three-strong team reached the semi-finals of the contest, which is designed to find the best young hairdressers in the UK and Ireland.  During their 15-minute presentation, the talented trio competed against other London teams and brought their ideas to life by finishing haircuts and styling five models live on stage.  They were also required to explain every element of their show including the choreography, make-up, clothes and music to an esteemed panel of judges including hairdresser to the stars, Errol Douglas MBE.

Having won the London Finals, they will now go head to head against four other salons from Scotland, Ireland, the Midlands and the North of England to fight for the esteemed title of Talentspotting Junior Art Team 2008.  If victorious, they will win a bumper package of prizes including a photographic shoot directed by a leading hairdresser, and a trip to Barcelona in November.

Luke Reed, who also won the Young Colourist Award at the London Finals of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy 2008 just five months ago, was delighted with his team’s success:
“Winning the London Region was truly amazing!  It was a great feeling to know that all of the hard work we’d put in to prepare for the awards had paid off.  Having triumphed at the semis, we’re now all very excited to represent London in the Grand Final and will do everything we can to take our presentation to the next level.”

Louise Wood, owner of the Hair Advice Centre, is thrilled with her protégées’ performance:

“I am extremely proud of the team and their success.  They dedicated so much time to rehearsing and perfecting their presentation and have been richly rewarded.  Young people often don’t get the chance to shine, that’s why competitions like these are so positive.  With the creativity, passion and commitment they demonstrate, Luke, Jo and Carly are a credit to their generation and I’m sure they’ll work harder than ever to win at the Grand Final and bring the title home to Surrey.”

The Grand Final will take place at Renaissance, Chancery Court, London on 27th October 2008.
