Yorkshire hospital leading the way with infection control techniques

Scarborough General Hospital is leading the way in the fight against infection control by combining traditional infection control techniques with hydrogen peroxide vapour (HPV) bio-decontamination equipment.

Wanting to combat a recurring incidence of Clostridium difficle in a more proactive way, the infection prevention and control and decontamination teams looked to invest in an in-house managed bio-decontamination/deep clean service. 

Having reviewed the available technologies, the teams chose Bioquell’s latest HPV technology as the best solution, and two Bioquell Q-10 HPV generators were purchased in April 2010, along with training and equipment.

The infection prevention and control and decontamination teams used this technology to complement existing infection control measures.  The results have shown that the outbreaks have become fewer and better managed, leading to a significant reduction in the deployment of the Q-10 machines.  This good practice has helped the team to achieve a nomination for the Building Better Healthcare Award (BBH).
