David goes speed dating − or not!

As head of sales and marketing at PVL, David Almond is frequently regarded as the spokesperson in the company. So recently, he received an invitation to attend a speed networking event called Give Me 5.

But alas, our David misread the invitation as ‘speed dating’. Anxious at the prospect of charming the ladies, David put on his best comedy tie, paired with copious amounts of aftershave and hoped for the best. He also decided to take with him the iCelsius temperature probe, in case the conversation runs a bit dry. This way, he can check the temperature of his dates’ coffees and teas and warn them against scalding beverages. Ladies like that sort of thing, don’t they?

Arriving at the venue, David sheepishly made his way through the room and sat down at one of the tables with his name on it. One can only imagine his shock when he saw that instead of demoiselles, the ‘dates’ were middle aged men with recorders, cameras and spiral-bound notebooks.

Unfortunately for David (but very fortunate for us at PVL) most of those attending the speed session were trade journalists in search of a good product story for their magazine. Give Me 5 is a media event run in a speed-networking format which allows a company spokesperson to brief 10-12 journalists in quick succession.

So David only had 5 minutes to deliver his story to the journalists rotating between the tables every five minutes upon the sound of the bell.

Despite his disappointment, David decided to make the most of the situation and talk to journalists about his work at PVL and the new range of products. The iCelsius probe came in handy as well; many of David’s interlocutors were interested in the app, as well as the device itself − so all was not lost.

After finding that the networking session concluded with drinks and an extensive buffet containing sausages on a stick, David decided that the day wasn’t a complete waste of aftershave after all…
