Olympic Torch laps Blakedown Track

Day 12 of the Olympic Torch relay saw the flame visit and lap the athletics track built by Blakedown Sport & Play at William Brookes School, Much Wenlock in Shropshire.

It was here the modern Olympic Games were founded by school namesake Dr William Penny Brookes Back in 1850.

John Simpson Vice President of the Wenlock Olympian Society carried the torch into the school, where pupils were attempting to break the world record for the greatest number of participants in a one-hour 100m relay. This turned out to be a resounding success with the record of 191 being broken by 230 runners

Olympic Bronze medal winner Alison Williamson, who will be competing for Team GB this summer carried the flame around the track.

This first class track was just part of numerous sports facilities constructed by Blakedown Sport & Play at the school. The works carried out over 3 phases included a sand-filled ATP, a tarmac multi use games area and a natural rugby pitch all of which continue to be a great success and a huge asset to the school and local community.
