What’s the difference between LED strip lighting and LED tape?
If you’re looking for a simple way to create unique, energy-efficient ambient lighting in your home or business, you can’t go far wrong with LED strip lighting or LED tape.
Both are highly versatile, top quality lighting solutions. However, many people mistake them for being the same thing. In reality, LED strip lighting suits certain applications better than LED tape, and vice versa.
In this blog post, we’ll shed some light on the difference between these two products, and help you decide which one is best for your lighting project.
A closer look at LED strip lights
Energy-efficient LED strip lights are designed to replace those old fashioned, energy-guzzling fluorescent fittings that you used to find in many offices and school classrooms.
LED strip lights, as the name suggests, are a long, rigid strip of high quality LEDs that provide you with up to 50,000 hours of light, making them extremely energy efficient.
With their wide beam angle, LED strip lights provide a focused light, which means they’re a great quick fix for making everyday tasks such as preparing food on a kitchen worktop a whole lot easier.
A closer look at LED tape
LED Tape is a long, thin strip of circuit board with high quality LEDs running all the way along its length.
Available in a variety of colours, from warm white to radiant red, LED tape is one of the easiest lighting systems to install. With a 3m self-adhesive backing, you simply peel it off and stick it where you want it, meaning there’s no need for mounting or brackets.
One of the biggest benefits of LED tape is its flexibility. It’s incredibly bendy, almost like a tape measure, making it ideal for lighting unusually-shaped areas, such as spiral staircase bannisters, for instance.
And just like LED strip lights, LED tape runs directly off the mains through a 12v transformer, making it really safe to use.
Spot the difference
As you can see, both LED strip lights and LED tape provide an excellent mood lighting solution. However, there are a few subtle differences between the two that you may want to take into consideration before deciding which one to buy. These include:
Versatility
LED tape is generally thinner and flatter than LED strip lights, which makes it easier to fit into tight, confined spaces such as alcoves and under bannisters.
Type of light
LED strip lights provide a more focused (accent) light than LED tape, which makes it much more suitable for lighting very specific areas, such as kitchen worktops or display cabinets. LED tape, on the other hand, is perfect for more subtle accent lighting.
So, if you’re looking for flexibility and lighting for small spaces, you may be better off with LED tape. However, if you want to add a splash of bright light on a particular area, then we recommend LED strip lighting.
