Calypso drinks - chilled water system

The Calypso soft drinks factory in Tattenhall, Chester uses water from a borehole, which was sunk in 1938 by Wyatts of Whitchurch to supply water to the factory. The water is hard but very pure and meets EEC regulations for mineral water quality.

Originally established in 1885 as a milk processing business, Calypso first started producing fruit flavoured drinks for the children’s market from its on-site spring water in 1962.

With sales now in excess of 250 million consumer units per annum, the company employs a workforce of 300 producing cup drinks, freeze pops and ready to drink cartons under the Calypso, Tip-Top, Dennis the Menace, Flintstone, Tom & Jerry and the Rugrats brand names.

In the factory, borehole water is used for a chilled water system, which feeds moulds and processing equipment associated with the forming, filling and sealing of plastic cups. High levels of calcium carbonate in the water supply reduced the effectiveness of the system, necessitating the regular manual descaling of the equipment.

In 1996 an ENiGMA Electronic DeScaling system was installed on the chilled water system and evaluated for a period of 3-4 months. Since then, the equipment has remained scale free and is now only cleaned as part of the regular maintenance programme.

Such has been the success of the ENiGMA system that the company has recently installed a further unit on another of the factory’s lines.
