Global warming is impacting all businesses − is your business ready?
Global warming is caused by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which trap heat. The UK government has set a target for the UK to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Companies need to plan now to ensure their business remains sustainable.
Why is this important now?Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing our world. Greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere are causing global warming which if left unchecked will have disastrous consequences. There are many greenhouse gases, but the combined effect is measured as tonnes of CO2 equivalent. In June 2019 the government committed the UK to a legally binding target of net zero carbon by 2050. The Digest of UK Energy Statistics shows that transport, industry and commerce account for a significant part of the total energy consumption and hence greenhouse gas emissions in the UK.
Plan now to achieve Net Zero Carbon
While 2050 might seem a long way off, companies are already coming under pressure from investors, customers and through government policies. The government has introduced green taxes that increase the cost of emitting greenhouse gases while at the same time introducing grants and cheap loans to encourage the take up of new technologies that significantly reduce GHG emissions. The key to achieving net zero carbon is the rapid decarbonisation of electricity generation through renewable sources such as wind and solar.
We offer a comprehensive review of a company’s total energy consumption including buildings, process and transport. We identify energy and cost saving opportunities and develop a long term plan to achieve net zero carbon. We identify critical issues that need to be addressed now to ensure the business is sustainable. For example, the government decision to phase out petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030 means companies must plan now to meet their future transport needs through introducing low emission vehicles. We review the vehicle fleet and make the business and environmental case for electric vehicles taking account of grants and tax incentives.
