Roots of Solar Energy
Contrary to common belief, renewable radiation has been around for far longer. In 1839, a solar cell was developed for the first time in France.
The first solar panel was constructed with selenium wafers and mounted on a rooftop in New York City in 1883. Four decades later, with an energy conversion efficiency of just 1%.Following this, a few patents for solar cells and solar panels were created in the US, with Nikola Tesla's patent for a solar panel being one of them.
How does solar energy function?
The photovoltaic effect is the mechanism used to produce solar energy. If you've ever observed a solar panel, you've probably noticed that it is composed of numerous tiny squares. Solar cells, photovoltaic cells, or PV cells are the names given to those squares.
Solar cells made of silicon are used in almost all solar panels that you see. Each cell has a positive layer with space for the extra electrons to move to and a negative layer with excess electrons. The electrons are jolted loose and start moving to the positive layer when sunlight strikes that negative layer. Solar electricity is the flow of electrons!
How do solar energy systems produce electricity?
The photovoltaic effect has shown us how solar power is generated, but how do we use solar energy in our homes?
DC electricity, often known as direct current, is generated by solar panels. DC electricity must be transformed into AC electricity because the majority of residences are unable to use it. Solar inverters play a role in this process since they transform DC electricity generated by solar panels into AC electricity.
Your home's appliances, including your TV, lights, and refrigerator, can then utilize the AC power!
