New High-Current Contact Tested to LV215: Pluggable on Three Sides for SMT and THT Soldering

Schalksmühle, 20.03.2025. Lumberg expands its portfolio of high-current contacts with the new 4580 01 high-current contact, designed for both SMT (reflow) and THT soldering.

This in-novative phase contact offers a flexible solution for various assembly requirements and is par-ticularly suited for high-current applications.

The 4580 01 high-current contact is characterized by its versatility and robust – and at 4.9 x 4.95 mm (W x D) particularly space-saving – design, which really comes into its own in tight in-stallation spaces. It can be plugged in from the top, bottom, and side, and is compatible with many standard blade contacts. The connection is made using flat blade connectors with widths from 2.8 to 6.8 mm and a thickness of 0.8 mm (0.5 mm in preparation), enabling easy integra-tion into various PCB designs.
The high-current contact has been tested and meets the requirements of industry standard LV215 for electric vehicle applications and Volkswagen standard VW 80332 for “Motor Vehicle High-Voltage Contacts”.

Technical Highlights:

Temperature Range: -40°C to +120°C
Material: CuCr alloy, tin-plated
Electrical Performance: Contact resistance < 1 mΩ, rated current up to 56 A (depending on installation and heat dissipation)
Mechanical Durability: High pull-out forces for stable connections (e.g., 32 N ± 15 N when plugged in from the top)
Insertion Cycles: Up to 5 cycles
Tests: LV215, VW 80332

With the 4580 01 high-current contact, Lumberg offers another powerful solution that meets the growing demands and new assembly designs in electronics development. Delivered in blister tape, the contact is particularly suited for automated manufacturing processes.

Lumberg has over 20 years of experience in the high-quality development of high-current con-tact elements. These are used millions of times in mechatronics modules and control units, es-pecially in modern electric vehicles and charging components for electric vehicles. They are also recommended for use in industrial electric motors and battery-powered tools. While the previous type 4580 04 could be plugged in from the top and the 03 from both the top and bot-tom and intended for SMT soldering or laser welding – all types can be welded very well onto busbars, for example – the three new types complement the outstanding versatility of the appli-cation options with their three-sided plug-in capability.
