Timber Acoustic Barrier for New Travis Perkins Depot
Travis Perkins recently opened a new depot in Coventry on the site of a former Homebase store. Although the development represented a positive commercial investment, its proximity to residential properties raised concerns among local residents about potential noise and disruption from deliveries and general operations.
Addressing these concerns was a key part of the planning process. During public consultations, residents voiced objections due to fears of increased noise. In response, the planning application was updated to include proposals for fencing designed to mitigate sound and enhance site privacy.
To meet these needs, Jacksons Fencing supplied and installed 160 metres of 2 metre high 12K Envirofence®, a timber acoustic barrier engineered to reduce environmental noise. With a surface mass of 10–12kg/m² which satisfies the planning/architects' normal acoustic specification, the lightweight reflective system is ideal for built-up areas.
Jacksons managed the full installation, including removal of old fencing and vegetation. The new barrier was securely set into concrete foundations and followed the site’s kerb lines to ensure long-term strength and durability.
Constructed from interlocking timber boards, the fence creates a solid, gap-free surface that blocks and reflects noise back to its source. It also offers complete visual screening, enhancing privacy for both depot users and nearby homes.
Unlike standard fencing, acoustic barriers are specifically designed to absorb and reflect sound waves, making them highly effective in reducing noise impact in residential settings.
Visual appeal was another important consideration. As the site is visible from residential streets and surrounded by greenery, the fencing needed to blend with the environment. The natural timber finish of 12K Envirofence offers a warm and attractive appearance, softening the industrial boundary and enhancing the local streetscape. Over time, the wood will weather to a silvery grey, integrating further into its surroundings without compromising performance.
All Jacksons acoustic fencing is manufactured in the UK and treated with a unique preservation process. The installation is backed by a 25 year guarantee against rot and insect attack, offering long-term peace of mind.
The 12K Envirofence installation has helped Travis Perkins deliver a depot that functions efficiently while minimising its impact on nearby residents, demonstrating a responsible approach to development and community engagement.
