Schools Urged to Flush Out Water Waste Over Summer with Simple Upgrades

With schools quieter over the summer months, maintenance teams are being encouraged to tackle costly and often unnoticed water waste by upgrading outdated washroom controls and repairing common issues like leaky toilets and inefficient urinal systems.

Cistermiser, one of the UK’s leading providers of water and energy saving management solutions, is highlighting the opportunity for schools to cut unnecessary water usage and reduce bills by reviewing three key areas: traditional hydraulic urinal controls, ageing toilet cisterns and older infrared or solenoid valves that may no longer be performing efficiently.

“Many schools are still operating with legacy washroom systems that leak or flush more often than needed, particularly during holidays or overnight,” says Richard Braid, Managing Director at Cistermiser. “Simple upgrades – like switching from hydraulic to intelligent IRC 2 urinal valves or checking for silent toilet leaks – can make a big difference to both water consumption and maintenance costs.”

Cistermiser’s innovative range includes the retrofit-friendly electronic IRC 2 (Infrared Control) valve for urinal cisterns and Easyflush EVO sensor activated WC dual flush valve, both which eliminate cistern leaks and help reduce unnecessary flushing while supporting long-term savings. With increasing pressure on schools to manage operating costs and improve sustainability, addressing water waste is an effective and often overlooked step.

Richard continues: “It’s not just about the summer break – water waste can occur year-round. But quieter periods make it easier to review systems and carry out impactful improvements that will benefit schools throughout the academic year.”

Cistermiser is also encouraging facility managers to consider regular checks and maintenance schedules for water systems as part of their sustainability planning, helping schools stay compliant and avoid unexpected bills due to leaks or overuse.
