Metal Gutta Proudly Manufactures Bespoke Copper Products For RHS Chelsea Gold Medal-Winning Garden

Over the past few months, our team has had the privilege of manufacturing a series of bespoke copper architectural features for Contain the Rain, the Gold Medal-winning garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, created in collaboration with Flood Re and John Howlett Studio.

The project challenged us to combine traditional craftsmanship, precision engineering and modern fabrication techniques to create a complete water management story woven throughout the garden.

Inspired by Moroccan courtyard design and a strong hexagonal geometric theme, every copper feature was carefully designed to work both functionally and visually as part of one cohesive landscape.

Throughout the project, our team manufactured:

• A bespoke floating copper water blade designed to appear suspended within planting, feeding water into handcrafted copper troughs below

• Bespoke copper water rills inspired by traditional Moroccan water channels, carrying water elegantly between troughs and planters

• Hexagonal copper guttering, custom outlets and slot drains designed specifically for the garden’s architectural rainwater management system

• Bespoke hexagonal copper downpipes fabricated from flat sheet copper and hand finished to create sculptural drainage features

• Handcrafted copper rain cups suspended with individually formed brass hangers, transforming rainwater movement into a calming visual feature

• A striking geometric copper door surround featuring water jet cut detailing, CNC folded sections, soldered mitred corners and concealed fixings, creating one of the garden’s final architectural centrepieces

Every piece was manufactured by our team using a combination of water jet cutting, CNC folding, TIG welding, soldering, hand forming, polishing and finishing techniques to achieve the refined appearance required for RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Projects like this demonstrate how functional rainwater management can become part of the architecture itself rather than something hidden away. The result is a garden where craftsmanship, engineering, sustainability and design all work together to create an immersive experience.

We are incredibly proud to have contributed to such a unique and ambitious project and grateful to everyone involved throughout the process.
