Why AWTUK surveys every job before it quotes

AWTUK does not price work from photographs or over the phone. Every project is surveyed on site first — a policy driven by the technical risk in modern glazing rather than by sales process.

Glass is not uniform. Sealed units get replaced piecemeal over a building's life, and modern glazing frequently carries low-emissivity or other efficiency coatings that change how a pane behaves under a solar film. Darker, more absorbent films generate heat within the glass itself; applied to the wrong specification of pane, that can create thermal stress and, in the worst cases, cracked glass.

On survey, AWTUK tests every pane individually rather than sampling a representative window, identifies the glass type and any coatings present, takes exact measurements, and specifies only films genuinely suited to the glazing and the client's objectives.

"What looks like one uniform run of windows from the car park is very often three different glass types," said Bennett. "Sampling one and assuming the rest match is how installers end up cracking a client's glazing. It takes longer to test them all. It's also the only honest way to price it."

External application: the performance case

Where glazing specification or performance requirements demand it, AWTUK installs externally applied films — a capability a significant share of the UK installer base does not offer.

Externally applied film stops solar energy before it reaches the glass rather than after. The same sputtered grey film rejects approximately 68% of total solar energy applied externally, against roughly 61% internally; 3M Prestige 40 achieves around 71% in external application. Where thermal comfort is the priority — or where internal film would risk thermal stress on the existing glazing — external application is frequently the appropriate specification. External installations are finished with a weatherproof mastic bead, a requirement of suppliers' extended external warranties.

Compliance work for commercial buildings

Alongside solar control, AWTUK installs manifestation film to full-height glazing — the visible markings required in commercial and public buildings to prevent collisions with glass, from simple frosted bands and dots through to custom logos and decorative patterns.
