Hedging Plants Direct Launches Comprehensive Euonymus Hedging Care Guide

Hedging Plants Direct has published a new Euonymus Hedging Care Guide to help gardeners and landscapers understand the very different plants sold under the Euonymus name, from compact evergreen Box alternatives to native deciduous Spindle.

The nursery says the guide was created because Euonymus is often treated as though every variety needs the same care. In practice, Green Spire and Jean Hugues are small-leaved evergreens suited to neat, low formal hedges, while variegated cultivars such as Silver Queen, Emerald ‘n’ Gold and Emerald Gaiety have a lower, more spreading habit. Native Spindle, Euonymus europaeus, is different again, losing its leaves in autumn and fitting naturally into informal and wildlife-focused planting.

The new resource brings the main growing advice together in one place, including:

  • choosing the right Euonymus for the intended hedge
  • planting times and soil preparation
  • spacing for different cultivars and root types
  • watering during establishment
  • feeding and pruning
  • seasonal maintenance and common growing problems

Will Bodsworth of Hedging Plants Direct said: “Euonymus can be a really useful group of plants, but the advice has to match the variety. A Green Spire hedge being clipped as a neat Box alternative needs a different approach from native Spindle in a mixed hedge. We wanted the guide to make those differences clear, so customers can choose the right plant and look after it properly from the start.”

The guide also explains why Green Spire and Jean Hugues are useful where gardeners want the appearance of a small-leaved formal hedge without planting Buxus. As Euonymus rather than Box, they are not hosts for Box blight or Box tree caterpillar, although they can still experience their own pests, diseases and growing stresses.

Practical establishment advice is a major part of the resource. Pot-grown Euonymus can generally be planted throughout the year when conditions are suitable, while root-balled plants and bare-root Spindle are seasonal. The guide also stresses the importance of thorough watering while roots establish and adjusting spacing to the exact cultivar, plant size and root type rather than relying on one universal figure.

Horticultural content in the guide has been reviewed by nursery founder and grower Gwynne Bodsworth, drawing on more than four decades of practical nursery experience.
