See what you’re missing with Scanna

From postal security, specialist portable X-ray to intelligent checkpoint screening, Scanna gives security professionals better ways to see, understand and respond to concealed threats.

When something is concealed or hidden behind dense material, the quality and breadth of the information available to the person making the security decision matters.

That principle drives Scanna’s approach to X‑ray inspection by not just producing an image, but giving operators the tools, flexibility and support to extract more usable information from it.

At International Security Expo at Olympia, 29–30 September on Stand F65, Scanna will demonstrate how portable and cabinet systems, intelligent control and image enhancement software and emerging screening and sensor technologies can be combined into practical, mission-focused solutions.

Portable X-ray – two technologies, one platform.

Portable X-ray remains central to Scanna’s offering, supporting military, police, borders, TSCM, government, venue, transport and specialist security teams where inspection needs to take place in the field often with minimal time.

The ScanSilc DR and VC range provides high-quality digital radiography across a choice of detector sizes, from 18 x 24 cm through to 86 x 86cm.

This gives users the flexibility to select the right combination of portability, coverage and image quality for their particular application, whether that is in a confined space, deployed from a backpack or for special project or vehicle inspection.

Its flexible imaging plates contain no electronics, allowing them to slide and be positioned in tight or awkward spaces (under stairs, in footwells, behind furniture) where conventional rigid detectors cannot easily be deployed.

Multiple plates can also be combined into a mosaic image, providing a larger view for applications such as vehicle inspection.

With both ScanSilc and VC DR and ScanX Scout CR systems integrated with ScanView X imaging software, users can deploy either system from the same laptop or tablet.

This creates a dual-technology, expandable system that can evolve around the user’s mission.

Operators can select the most appropriate imaging technology for the object or environment while maintaining a common software platform, user workflow and training base.

Supporting users of pulsed x-ray generators who previously had no way of measuring radiation on tasks, Scanna now offer the PXRDhandheld pulsed X-ray dosemeter to let x-ray operators measure radiation dose, output and set safety distances live in the field.

The image is only the beginning

Scanna’s focus is not simply on producing a high-quality X-ray image, but on helping operators get more information from it, too.

ScanView X provides specialist image-enhancement tools and filters designed to help users manipulate and interrogate images producing an optimal image with often a single button click and with options to pre-configure automatic filters to reduce manual inputs on tasks.

With advanced contrast and noise-reducing tools, ScanView X, supports the identification of more demanding tasks such as revealing detail hidden behind dense metal such as UXO, or within densely packed bags containing electronic items.

That emphasis on image quality and software is equally important in Scanna’s Scanmax cabinet X-ray range.

Scanmax compact systems are designed for a range of applications from postal, mail and parcel inspection through to high-resolution platforms for more demanding applications such as electronic device inspection and detailed examination of complex objects.

This allows a prison, government building, corporate facility or critical infrastructure site to select a system appropriate to its particular risk and operational requirement, while higher-performance environments can benefit from more advanced imaging capabilities.

At the top end, Scanmax 225D provides component-level detail to check for anomalies, flaws, adaptations and counterfeits, while the new Scanmax 35 Ultra combines high-resolution imaging with dual-energy capability, providing operators with additional material information such as the presence of an explosive concealment in a laptop.

AI-powered technology for intelligent detection

The next stage of Scanna’s development is about making that information even more useful.

Scanna has been selected for the HADES Catapult programme, working with Connected Places Catapult on behalf of the Department for Transport, to develop new approaches to aviation security screening.

One project is focused on applying adaptive AI to alarm resolution for electronic devices, using the high-resolution capabilities of the Scanmax 35 Ultra to help operators assess alarms more efficiently.

A second project is focused on the ScanPlex automated step-on-step-off shoe screening, using specialist sensor technology and AI to detect explosive threats without requiring passengers to remove their shoes.

Together, the projects demonstrate a direction that is increasingly important to security.
