PHS Shortlisted for National Recycling Awards

De-Pack, the specialist aerosol recycling service and part of the PHS Wastemanagement divisiongroup, has been shortlisted in the category of Materials Recycler of the Year at the National Recycling Awards 2011.

The awards recognise and reward the efforts of public and private sector achievements in recycling and waste management.

Established in 2004, De-Pack Ltd is the leading company in the UK able to offer a complete recovery and recycling service with no emissions into the atmosphere. The company’s state-of-the-art site features a unique extraction and compaction system, one of the only such systems available on its scale in Europe, to ensure that each component element of the aerosol is recovered. All liquid waste, propellant gas and metal packaging is either re-used or recycled with nothing sent to landfill or incineration.

Speaking about the shortlisting Clare Noble, MD of Wastemanagement XXX said; “The De-Pack service fulfils an essential service and is proving increasingly popular. The challenge for society is how to effectively recycle the 600 million aerosols used in the UK every year.

While over 75% of local authorities now recycle aerosols and there are over 2000 dedicated recycling banks for the collection of spent aerosols, there has traditionally been an issue with the disposal of propellants and other liquids and gases. Our service guarantees complete recycling with no emissions into the atmosphere.

“To achieve a shortlisting for these prestigious awards is testament to how effective and impressive the De-Pack service is. It comes on the tail of several years of sustained growth and is the perfect start to 2011.”

During 2007, the third year of De-Pack’s commissioning, liquids and gases recovered and used as fuel prevented the burning of more than 150 tonnes of fossel fuels. In addition, nearly 550 tonnes of metal was recycled and the unique technology prevented the release of more than 24 tonnes of propellant gas and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere. In 2010 61 tonnes of propellant gas and VOCs were recovered.

De-Pack aerosol recycling is only one of the specialist hazardous waste services offered by PHS Wastemanagement. Other services include; healthcare and packaged chemical waste, laboratory chemicalslamp recycling, battery waste recycling, spill and containment services.

The PHS Group achieved success at last year’s National Recycling Awards when a partnership led by Lime (part of PHS Group) scooped the Best Partnership Project for a ‘closed loop’ paper recycling system.
