All turf is not the same…Ours is plastic-free and grown on over 1,000 hectares of distinctive black organic soil. We have been growing turf for over 60 years and ours is among the best in the UK. As a result we believe we enjoy a solid reputation for producing quality turf at sensible prices.                     

Across five locations Harrowden produces and sells a variety of turf; Premium, Meadowmat wildflower turf and Species Rich – for sale all over the UK. By controlling every aspect of turf production from the time the seed goes into the ground, through the care and maintenance of the growing crop, to the time it is delivered we believe we enjoy a number of advantages over others in the industry.

Our farms can irrigate during dry spells and supply can be switched between farms if severe weather threatens. Not only that but as one of the largest turf producers in Europe we can negotiate great prices and demand the highest quality seed, equipment and haulage, passing the benefits on to our customers.

Our countryside has suffered a dramatic reduction in wild flowers which has had a knock-on effect for insects, birds and pollinators.

Meadowmat – in eight different varieties is our way to try to redress the balance.  

It can take years to establish a wildflower meadow and there are precious few left. Whilst growing wildflowers sounds easy the conditions they prefer are fast disappearing. So Meadowmat is a fast and simple solution to creating a wildflower bed or better still a meadow. Meadowmat was specifically designed and developed to create a fast solution to wildflower adoption. Not only is it quicker than seed but its also less work than plug plants. In short, Meadowmat is really “wildflowers on a roll”.

We are one of the few sedum growers in the UK. Sedum is very robust and can support wildlife, improve insulation and add extra colour to any garden.

Sedums are succulents. Not only are they rich in pollen and nectar, they are also a great food source for bees, butterflies, moths and hoverflies. Sandy soil is easy to drain but doesn’t hold on to plant nutrients very well. Heavy clay soil has plenty of plant nutrients but it’s difficult to work with and can have drainage issues. Peaty soil is fantastic but if you’re buying it in please make sure it’s from a sustainable source.

A dark coloured soil suggests that it contains lots of organic matter. At Harrowden we produce high-quality turf on these soils and we reprocess some of the organic matter from the turf production process to create some of the best topsoil available.
