These are an essential tool at events & gatherings attended by the general public, a to address, control and manage the crowds. They are frequently used for music festival, fete, sports tournament, a march or demonstration, conference, concert, film production, event stewarding, safety marshals... - where you need to be able to get your message across to a large group of people quickly & simply.

For many public events, megaphones are a condition of the event's licence, to aid with fire & safety evacuations or other emergencies, even as a back-up for when the primary PA systems fails.

Loudhailers are a key requirement for stewards and safety staff at public events - you need to be able to give instructions to the public - especially in case of fire, overcrowding, evacuation or other emergency situations.
