Fire extinguishers may be a relatively small element of an overall fire safety strategy, but they play a vital role. They can help protect lives and property by extinguishing a minor fire or containing it until the fire service arrives.

All extinguishers must undergo an annual basic inspection. This includes checking the weight, confirming the correct pressure, and examining the unit for any signs of damage or corrosion. Cartridge-operated extinguishers require an internal inspection, along with verification of the cartridge weight. Labels should be checked to ensure they remain clear and readable, and where accessible, dip tubes, hoses and operating mechanisms should be tested to confirm they are unobstructed and functioning correctly.
