Free Vent Area Calculation
To effectively clear smoke at the appropriate rate, the recommended free vent area required from your window or windows is as follows:
Stairwell Windows: 1 square metre of free vent area at 90 degrees from the opening vent.
Lobby Windows: 1.5 square metres of free vent area at 90 degrees from the opening vent.
Windows should be bottom-hinged and open outwards, or side-hinged and open outwards, ideally positioned above the height of the door to ensure smoke is cleared above head height.
