Terrafors-IS − A Solid State, In Situ Sterilisable Bioreactor
Bottmingen, July 19, 2012 - The Terrafors-IS from INFORS HT represents the next stage in the use of solids substrates for bioconversion and bioremediation.
Aseptic operation, sophisticated process control and easy handling make the Terrafors-IS ideal for laboratory-scale investigations. Soils, plant materials, slurries and waste water are allsuitable substrates.
The Terrafors-IS provides a standardised solution for in situ sterilisable, laboratory-scale fermentation of solids and semi-solids. It provides aseptic conditions through automatic
steam sterilisation of a rotating drum. Maximal working volumes include 3-4 kg of solids (e.g., soil), semi-solids (e.g., sludge) or up to 7 L of liquids (e.g., oil).
Two ports on the top plate are included for substrate addition/removal, and sampling.
The new automatic in situ sterilisation system uses direct steam injection with a maximum temperature of 134°C. The use of steam for sterilisation is ideally suited for production of pharmaceuticals and also allows a “one-vessel” solution for fungal substrate
bioconversion followed by microbial fermentation e.g. as part of biofuel production. Direct injection of steam makes it possible to adjust the moisture content of the substrate to the ideal level. An optional steam generator can be mounted on the base for ease of use.
A touch screen provides direct control of key parameters such as temperature and rotation (speed & direction), with options for pressure control, gas flow control and exit gas analysis. The exit gas analysis can be used to monitor the rate of substrate utilisation over time, using the Iris Parallel Bioprocess Control Software.
