Two new heads of state take office

On 25 July 2017 new heads of state take office in India and Samoa.

India’s new president has been elected for a five-year term by an electoral college consisting of members of the upper and lower Houses of Parliament, whose votes are weighted according to the population of the state they represent.

In the election on 17 July, Ram Nath Kovind, a member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 65.7% of the vote, against 34.3% for Meira Kumar of the Indian National Congress (INC).

In Samoa the head of state is an elective monarch, the o le Ao o le Malo, chosen by the Legislative Assembly for a five-year term of office. Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aletoa Sualauvi II was unanimously elected as head of state by the Legislative Assembly on 5 July 2017.
