About the Author: Chris’s interest in the prevention of damage to health from workplace skin exposure started in 1979. He uses his technical/engineering experience, gained in a wide variety of different industrial sectors (both in the U.K. and overseas), in combination with his knowledge of dermatology, to identify where workplace conditions represent a potential for occupational skin disease or systemic damage. He then develops effective methods for the adequate control of skin exposure, so far as possible based on controlling the actual process and with attention to cost effectiveness.

He is recognised for his special expertise on the selection and use of PPE, in particular gloves for chemical protection. He has assisted many clients in investigating and managing workplace skin problems, often working closely with a dermatologist for the clinical diagnosis.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management, a member of the British Occupational Hygiene Society, the European Society of Contact Dermatitis, the British Society for Cutaneous Allergy, and an associate member of the Royal Society of Medicine. He has been described by a leading European dermatologist as:‘...the international expert in the field of risk assessment in occupational settings related to skin hazards.”

“Chris and his daughter, Helen, are THE experts on skin protection in the workplace” − Prof. Anne Harriss, Reader in Educational Development and Course Director, London South Bank University.

Chris has contributed to several books on occupational skin management, including:

Current Problems in Dermatology, Vol 25, Prevention of Contact Dermatitis [ISBN 3-8055-6311-6] - Chapter on ‘Risk Assessment and Exposure Control in an Occupational Setting”
Protective Gloves for Occupational Use [ISBN 0-8493-1558-1] - Chapter on ‘Practical Considerations When Selecting and Using Gloves for Chemical Protection in a Workplace’
Kanerva’s Occupational Dermatology, 2nd edition, [ISBN 978-3-642-02034-6], - Chapters on ‘Risk assessment’ and ‘The workplace survey’
Principles and Practice of Skin Toxicology [978-0-470-51172-5] - Chapters on ‘Prevention of occupational skin disease’ and ‘Occupational skin exposure: legal aspects’

In 1998 Chris produced the book entitled ‘Essentials of Occupational Skin Management’ [ISBN 1-85988-045-2], about which Prof. Joop van Hemmen (TNO Netherlands) commented in the Annals of Occupational Hygiene: “Chris Packham has done well to write this very practical book. He is one of very few people who could have done so.”

His newly published book ‘A Practical Guide to Occupational Skin Management’ provides the comprehensive guidance required to develop and operate an effective occupational skin management system.
