What special driving skills do HGV drivers have?

Maybe you''ve been expecting some goods at your company''s place of work and get a call out the blue from the driver saying, "I''m making a delivery to you, but I can''t find where you are?"

We're not talking about home delivery people here. But it is a typical problem that delivery and agency drivers face when they are trying to get equipment or specialist items to companies and distribution centres that they've not visited before.

Sat Nav's are very good for getting you from A to B efficiently and will often provide alternative roads if traffic or an accident affects your planned route. But when you arrive at an un-named road in a large Industrial estate that has limited building signage or a poorly laid out plan of the estate, trying to find the right location can waste drivers valuable time, and cause their delivery for the client to be late, when the driver has not option but to ride around the local roads trying to find the drop off point.

What3words has divided the world into 3m squares, and given each square a simple and unique address made up of three dictionary words. The beauty of this system is that in particular places where there is no regular street addresses, such as large industrial estates, the desired location can now, with pin point accuracy, easily be found.

It will be three random words and their combination can be quite amusing. But it works!

Of course it can be used for lots of different situaltions, not just work. It's helped rescuers find people stuck up mountains. It's helped people who were lost in overgrown woods find there way back to civilisation. And it's help people find one another in adventure parks. I'm sure you can think of other situations where it's going to be a useful tool.
