Windows 10 is due to expire on 14th October. How to get another year's support

The matter of Windows 10 coming to the end of its life as a supported operating system on October 14th has caused consternation amongst some Windows users, and in some organisations. The good news is that Microsoft relented, and allowed another year through ESU. You have to register for it, though, to remain protected. This short article explains what Windows 10 users can do, to remain supported by Microsoft.

There is now one day before Windows 10 officially becomes End-of Life (EOL). However, your copy needn't go unsupported because you can now register with Microsoft for ESU (Extended Security Updates). Here's how:

There are 3rd party updates available, but it is now Microsoft's responsibility to provide these updates for another year so why take the risk?

Please note, however, that (as explained in the article) you do need to have your current Windows 10 fully up-to-date to be eligible, and you need to log on with a Microsoft identity (i.e. Microsoft email address) so for some actually getting to the point of registering for ESU may take longer than you expected.

If you come to this article after 14th October, don't panic. The next security update won't be available until early November, so you be at any more risk until that (as yet undisclosed) date.

This will only keep you going for a year. It is true that Microsoft have kept older operating systems going for longer (through LTSC, Long Term Support Channel), but that is only for large corporates with particular needs, and it is very expensive!

Anyone with a cyber security hat would still recommend you to get Windows 11 as soon as you can. But now, you've got a year to save up for the hardware!
