Winter Maintenance Checklist: Protect Your Water Chiller & Prevent Costly Downtime
As temperatures drop and wetter, harsher conditions roll in, water chillers become increasingly vulnerable to freezing, blocked components and efficiency loss.
To safeguard your system and avoid expensive breakdowns this winter, follow these essential maintenance steps:
1. Always power down safelyBefore carrying out any work, turn off the equipment and electrically isolate it.
2. Check glycol concentration (where applicable)Freezing water can cause severe internal damage and halt production. Ensure glycol levels are correct for the lowest expected outdoor temperature.
3. Keep coils and components clearDaily removal of leaves, dirt, and debris from heat exchangers and condensers prevents airflow restriction, overheating, and unnecessary downtime.
4. Clean or replace filters regularlyBlocked filters reduce water quality and system efficiency. Maintain strainers and filters to protect pumps and pipework.
5. Inspect insulation and pipeworkFrozen pipework can burst. Check insulation for wear and replace if required to prevent costly repairs.
6. Check for water and refrigerant leaksAny suspected refrigerant leak must be reported and repaired immediately by an accredited F-Gas engineer to ensure compliance and safety.
7. Book routine servicing for optimal efficiencyA professional service once or twice a year keeps your system running efficiently—helping reduce energy consumption and operational costs.⚠️ Systems using refrigerants such as R407C, R410A, or R134a with ≥5 tonnes CO₂ equivalent must receive an annual leak check by a qualified engineer, as required by law.
