It’s that time of year again when working oIutdoors or in unheated environments starts to get less than comfortable!
Winter doesn’t just mean a less pleasant working environment; it can significantly increase the risk of cold-related injuries, accidents, and a drop in productivity.
Good workwear isn't just about comfort; it's about compliance and safety, and that means different things in a UK winter. To try and help, we’ve pulled together a short guide on choosing the correct winter workwear to stay warm, stay dry, and stay safe.
1. Don’t Underestimate Layers
The biggest mistake you can make in winter is wearing a single, bulky layer. We suggest you try the three-layer system. This is a strategy that traps heat and allows for easy temperature regulation when the hard work starts. The three layers are:
Base Layer
This layer sits directly against your skin and is designed to wick sweat away from the body. Dry skin prevents heat loss. View our range.
Mid Layer
The mid-layer's job is insulation. Think fleeces, thermal sweatshirts and bodywarmers. View our range.
Outer Layer
This is your shield against the wind, rain, and snow. High-performance outdoor jackets, waterproof trousers, and softshell coats. View our range.
2. Protect Your Extremities
The body prioritises keeping your core warm, meaning blood flow is restricted to your extremities, making them vulnerable to frostbite and loss of dexterity. Your extremities are your hands, feet and head so think gloves, warm socks and boots, and a good hat.
3. Don't Forget Visibility
In winter conditions, when days are shorter and the weather is poor, Hi-Vis clothing is non-negotiable for safety, so don’t skip the most important step!
By investing in the right layered clothing, weather-resistant PPE, and high-visibility gear, you can protect your team's health, maintain their performance, and comply with essential safety regulations. Get in touch if you need support in kitting out your team this winter.
