Lush Chooses Prevented Ocean Plastic

Working alongside Spectra Packaging, leading high-street cosmetic retailer Lush Cosmetics has chosen to use Prevented Ocean Plastics.

Lush, the British cosmetics brand renowned for its ethical practices and environmental advocacy, is taking its sustainable packaging commitment to the next level with the global rollout of Prevented Ocean Plastic™ (POP). For over a decade, Lush has used 100% recycled PET for its clear plastic bottles, but the introduction of POP represents a powerful step in reducing ocean plastic pollution.

In partnership with Spectra Packaging, Lush has already introduced POP bottles in the UK across its 100ml, 250ml, and 500ml formats. Its manufacturing sites in Germany and Croatia have followed suit, while North America, Japan, and 1L bottles will transition later this year. The plastic used in POP is collected within 50km of coastlines or major waterways in Indonesia – areas at high risk of plastic pollution – and processed into premium-quality, certified recycled plastic.

Lush states that customers who purchase a product in one of these clear POP bottles are directly supporting marine conservation efforts and helping protect the coastal communities most impacted by plastic waste. “Being part of preventing tonnes of plastic from entering the oceans, as well as improving transparency of the supply chain, is very much fulfilling our ‘Lusher than we found it’ statement,” said Karolina Michalska from Lush’s Creative Buying team.

POP is more than just a material choice — it’s a community initiative. The programme supports infrastructure development and creates reliable income for local workers in regions where waste management is limited. The UK rollout alone is expected to stop over three million plastic bottles from reaching the ocean.

Spectra Packaging’s Sales Director, Jonathan Powell, highlighted the value of this shared sustainability vision, while POP Director Raffi Schieir praised Lush for choosing “better plastic” that supports people and planet.

Representatives from Lush and Spectra recently visited Bali to see the POP programme in action. The trip highlighted the tangible environmental and social benefits of turning waste into a valuable resource — and reaffirmed Lush’s role in pioneering ethical, sustainable change.
