Is Vehicle Branding Tax Deductible for Small Businesses in the UK?
If you run a small business, every pound spent on marketing needs to work hard. One of the questions we are often asked at The Sussex Sign Company is:
“Is vehicle branding tax deductible?”
The good news is that in most cases, yes, it is.
Vehicle graphics, wraps and van signage are generally treated as advertising expenses, which means they can usually be deducted from your business profits before tax is calculated.
For many small businesses, this makes vehicle branding not only a powerful marketing tool but also a tax-efficient investment.
Why HMRC Usually Allows Vehicle Branding as an Expense
HMRC allows businesses to claim expenses that are “wholly and exclusively for business purposes.”
Marketing and advertising clearly fall into this category. This includes:
• Website advertising • Google Ads • Printed brochures • Marketing campaigns • Vehicle branding
If your van or company car carries your business name, logo, website or contact details, it is clearly promoting your business and therefore usually qualifies as a legitimate marketing cost
How the Tax Saving Works
When your business spends money on advertising, the cost is deducted from profit before tax is calculated.
That means your business pays tax on a lower profit.
Let’s take a simple example.
A company spends £1,000 + VAT on vehicle graphics.
If the business is VAT registered:
• The £200 VAT can usually be reclaimed • The £1,000 cost reduces taxable profit
If the company pays 19% corporation tax, the tax saving would be:
£1,000 × 19% = £190
