The importance of a User-First Approach when designing reception furniture
As the focal point of any rception space, a reception desk needs to do far more than create a strong first impression - it must also support the people using it every day.
This article explores why a user-first approach is becoming increasingly important in reception furniture design, spanning ergonomics and accessibility, technology integration, and workflow.
Featuring insights from Clarke Rendall's Design Manager, Chris Horne, it highlights how practical, behind-the-scenes decisions can significantly improve both usability and the overall visitor experience.
Delivered in collaboration with Corley Woolley and architects Tate Hindle, the reception at 45 Folgate Street for Credit Suisse combined a clear design direction with highly considered detailing.
This high-specification project featured a bespoke reception desk finished in dark grey micro concrete and natural oak veneer, creating a timeless material combination. The micro concrete worksurfaces connected the desk to the exposed building fabric, while the oak softened the overall impact. Integrated lighting was used throughout to highlight the desk’s subtle design details.
Opposite the desk, bespoke panelling and doors were designed to conceal services while incorporating a cantilevered visitor bench, carefully engineered to maintain the appearance of a floating seat. Hidden steelwork provided the structural strength needed to support the bench and its users while preserving the clean, minimal aesthetic of the space.
