Acoustic barrier supports noise management at historic London music venue
The Half Moon in Putney, one of London's most celebrated grassroots music venues, has enhanced its noise management strategy with the installation of a specialist acoustic barrier system from Jacksons Fencing.
A fixture of the capital's live music scene since 1963, The Half Moon hosts live performances throughout the year while operating as a popular pub and community venue seven days a week. Situated within a predominantly residential area, the venue is committed to balancing its vibrant entertainment offering with consideration for neighbouring homes.
As a busy hospitality venue, The Half Moon generates a range of external noise sources. Alongside live music, activity within the rear service yard includes deliveries, waste and recycling management, keg handling, and the operation of air conditioning equipment. The outdoor terrace area, which is also used by customers during sporting events and social gatherings, further contributes to the site's acoustic environment.
To help reduce the impact of operational and entertainment-related noise on nearby residents, Jacksons supplied and installed an 8 metre long Jakoustic® Reflective Commercial and Highway acoustic barrier, supported by galvanised steel I-beam posts.
Positioned around the rear service area, the barrier provides an effective acoustic screen between the venue's operational activities and neighbouring properties. The installation helps minimise the transmission of sound from external doors, which are frequently used during trading hours and live performances, while also reducing noise associated with routine servicing, waste collections and equipment movements.
The barrier's height and acoustic performance were key factors in addressing the range of sound sources present on site, including continuous mechanical noise from air conditioning units and the intermittent impact noise created during day-to-day operations.
In addition to its noise reduction capabilities, the Jakoustic barrier offers long-term durability, backed by Jacksons' 25 year guarantee. The timber construction also provides a natural appearance that complements the surrounding residential environment, ensuring the solution is both practical and visually sympathetic to the local area.
The project demonstrates how acoustic barriers can help hospitality and entertainment venues operate successfully within residential communities. By managing external noise more effectively, venues are able to support positive relationships with neighbours while continuing to provide the experiences that make them popular destinations.
For The Half Moon, the installation represents an investment in both its future and its community. With a heritage spanning more than 60 years and a reputation as one of London's most iconic live music venues, the pub can continue welcoming performers and visitors while taking proactive steps to minimise the impact of noise on nearby residents.
