Expert Witness Gateway Receives FFEW Newly Launched Innovation Award as New Technology Platform Enters Expert Witness Market
Federation recognises ambitious new platform designed to connect legal professionals with specialist experts while helping manage the expert instruction process from enquiry to invoice
The Federation of Forensic and Expert Witnesses (FFEW) has announced Expert Witness Gateway as the recipient of its Newly Launched Innovation Award 2026–2027 for Innovation in Expert Witness Technology & Legal Case Management.
The recognition comes as Expert Witness Gateway seeks to establish a new technology-led proposition within the UK expert witness marketplace.
Designed to connect legal teams, Courts, insurers and other instructing parties with specialist expert witnesses, the Gateway aims to make identifying and working with an expert more streamlined, transparent and manageable.
However, it is the ambition to go beyond a conventional expert witness directory that particularly attracted the attention of the Federation.
More Than Finding an Expert
The expert witness sector brings together some of the most highly qualified specialists in medicine, science, engineering, forensics, finance, psychology and numerous other professions.
Finding the right specialist can nevertheless be only the beginning of the process.
Once an expert has been identified, legal teams may need to establish availability, define the scope of instruction, agree fees and timescales, securely exchange documents, monitor deadlines, communicate throughout the case and ultimately manage invoicing and administration.
Expert Witness Gateway has been developed around the concept of bringing more of this journey together.
Its proposition allows users to search for experts according to factors including specialism, discipline, region and specific expertise, with profiles providing information concerning qualifications, fees, timescales and scope of expertise.
Following selection, an enquiry can be made to establish availability, suitability and estimated costs before an expert is formally instructed.
The platform also promotes the ability to manage engagement through the Gateway, including secure file upload and storage, direct communication with experts, case events, calendars and reminders, through to invoicing.
It is this broader workflow that FFEW believes gives the concept significant potential.
An Expanding Multidisciplinary Expert Network
Expert Witness Gateway is developing a registry across a diverse range of professional disciplines.
Medical and clinical areas include fields such as psychiatry, paediatrics, radiology, forensic medicine, haematology, ophthalmology, general practice, neonatology and musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
Its wider areas extend into forensic science, DNA and trace evidence, genetics, pharmacology, psychology, social work, mental health, engineering, construction, environmental matters and other technical disciplines.
The platform has indicated that this list will continue to expand as additional appropriately qualified experts join the Gateway.
Maintaining Independence
A central issue in any technology-led expert witness service is ensuring that efficiency does not compromise the fundamental independence of expert evidence.
The Gateway's published model recognises this distinction.
Experts are expected to maintain professional and ethical standards and comply with the procedural requirements governing expert evidence, while the Gateway operates as a mechanism for facilitating the relationship rather than replacing the professional judgement of either the expert or instructing solicitor.
That principle was an important consideration in the Federation's assessment of the concept.
Recognising Innovation at the Beginning of the Journey
The FFEW Newly Launched Innovation Award differs deliberately from awards recognising longevity or established market leadership.
Instead, it has been created to identify a newly launched or developing organisation demonstrating a potentially important new idea, technology or approach to the delivery of expert witness services.
A spokesperson for the Federation of Forensic and Expert Witnesses said:
“What interested us about Expert Witness Gateway was the ambition to look beyond simply creating another searchable directory.”
“The legal professional's relationship with an expert does not end when they find the right name. In many respects, that is where it begins. The Gateway concept recognises the administration, communication, documentation and deadlines that follow an instruction and seeks to bring that journey into a more connected environment.”
The Federation added:
“It is still an emerging platform and its story is only beginning. That is precisely why we felt an innovation award was appropriate. We believe the concept deserves exposure to the legal and expert witness community, and we look forward to watching how the Gateway develops.”
Helping New Ideas Gain Recognition
For newly launched businesses operating within professional services, one of the greatest challenges can be gaining sufficient visibility to demonstrate what makes their proposition different.
This can be particularly difficult within expert witness services, where trust, professional credibility and reputation play a central role in purchasing and instruction decisions.
FFEW believes professional recognition can help innovative businesses communicate their proposition to the market while encouraging further discussion about how technology could improve interaction between solicitors and expert witnesses.
The Federation will therefore support Expert Witness Gateway's award throughout 2026–2027 with professional editorial coverage, LinkedIn promotion and digital publication.
A New Gateway to Expert Evidence
The launch comes at a time when the wider legal sector continues to examine how technology can reduce administrative burdens while improving access to specialist professional expertise.
Expert Witness Gateway's opportunity will now be to demonstrate that its combination of expert discovery and digital case management can deliver practical benefits to the professionals who use it.
For FFEW, the concept represents an encouraging example of new thinking entering the expert witness sector.
For that reason, Expert Witness Gateway has been selected as the recipient of the FFEW Newly Launched Innovation Award 2026–2027 for Innovation in Expert Witness Technology & Legal Case Management.
