TAWI Improves Baggage Handling Safety and Efficiency at London Stansted Airport

London Stansted Airport has improved baggage handling safety and efficiency with ergonomic lifting solutions from TAWI. By introducing vacuum lifters for standard, heavy and out-of-gauge luggage, the airport has reduced repetitive manual handling, helped protect staff from injury, and supported smoother baggage operations across one of the UK’s busiest airports.

London Stansted Airport needed a safer and more efficient way to manage baggage handling across its busy airport operation. As the third-largest airport in the UK, Stansted handles more than 27 million passengers each year, with luggage moving through the airport to more than 200 destinations worldwide.

With such a high volume of baggage being processed every day, manual lifting had become a major operational challenge. Baggage handlers were required to repeatedly lift and move luggage of different sizes, shapes and weights, often in demanding, fast-paced conditions. Manual handling was one of the airport’s top three causes of injuries, contributing to lost time and reduced efficiency.

To reduce manual handling risks and improve workplace safety, London Stansted Airport partnered with TAWI to install ergonomic baggage handling systems. Before the TAWI solution was introduced, at least one operator was needed to manually load luggage onto a dolly at the end of each of the airport’s four luggage chutes. This repetitive lifting placed physical strain on baggage handling staff and created a clear need for a more effective lifting solution.

The airport required a robust, high-quality and cost-effective system that could support a wide range of baggage lifting applications, while helping to protect staff and deliver a strong return on investment. TAWI worked closely with London Stansted Airport from the initial consultation stage to understand its processes, operational requirements and the day-to-day challenges faced by baggage handlers.

The result was a complete baggage lifting solution designed to make airport baggage handling safer, easier and more efficient. TAWI installed three types of lifting equipment at Stansted Airport: 26 High-Frequency Vacuum Lifters, 24 standard Baggage Lifters rated to 32.5 kg, and two out-of-gauge lifters for heavier and irregular baggage up to 60 kg.

These ergonomic lifting solutions allow baggage handlers to lift and move luggage of almost any size, shape and weight with significantly less physical effort. By reducing the need for repetitive manual lifting, the TAWI vacuum lifters help minimise strain, lower the risk of injury and support smoother baggage handling operations.

For London Stansted Airport, the installation demonstrates how vacuum lifting equipment can improve health and safety while maintaining the speed and reliability required in a busy airport environment. The system supports more efficient baggage handling, reduces pressure on operators and helps improve overall airport logistics performance.

For airports, logistics hubs and transport operators looking to reduce manual handling injuries, improve productivity and create safer working conditions, London Stansted Airport’s experience shows how TAWI baggage lifting solutions can transform a physically demanding process. With ergonomic vacuum lifting equipment tailored to airport baggage handling, TAWI helps businesses protect their people, improve efficiency and keep goods moving safely.
