Shell-&-Tube Heat Exchangers
A heat exchanger is an unfired pressure system in which two media flow past one another separated by as thin a wall as possible, so that if there is a temperature difference, they will mutually exchange heat without mixing in the process.
As the diagram shows, one medium flows through the shell chamber and the second medium through the tube chamber. The flow through the shell chamber is controlled by baffles, allowing as much cross flow to the tubes as possible. The form and spacing of the baffles is adapted to the application.
Depending on the expediency, speed and pressure loss, the flow through the tube chamber is carried out by a single pass or multiple passes.
With the exception of radiation losses, the input heat quantity is the same as the output heat quantity.
However, an efficient heat exchange can only take place if there is a sufficient temperature difference. The greater the temperature difference, the smaller the required heat transfer surface. This makes a compact apparatus design possible.
The heat transfer performance of a heat exchanger is the product of the mean logarithmic temperature difference, the heat transfer surface and the heat transfer coefficient. The latter is largely determined by the flow characteristic of the media, i.e. by the design features.
On the other hand, the supplier of heat exchangers must have extensive application expertise with regard to the thermodynamic properties of special media at relevant pressures and temperatures. This also applies to the issues of fouling factors and material compatibility.
The calculation and design of FUNKE heat exchangers is carried out with worldwide leading programs (e.g. HTRI, Heat Transfer Research Institute, USA) and with in-house developed software, which is already used around the world.

Safety Heat Exchangers
The range of safety shell-and-tube heat exchangers is based on the ‘three chamber devices’ principle, which was developed and patented by the company’s founder Karl-Heinz Funke.
Operating principle of a safety heat exchanger.
Here with double tubes, double sheets and leak sealing liquid.
Design Features
Media separated by double tube bundles, media cannot mix
Special sealing liquid for immediate leak indication
Leakage system works independently of the installation position
Leakage detection is possible through process control
Suitable for a wide range of liquid media
Application
Safety heat exchangers are used wherever the highest requirements for product purity in process engineering (e.g., food/pharmaceutical industry) are required, where there is an environmental risk of contaminating cooling or process water, or because mixing of the media can damage the machine or system.
Plate Heat Exchangers
In the area of plate heat exchangers, FUNKE offers a sophisticated range of products for almost any requirement in mechanical and plant engineering. FUNKE’s unique ‘Off-Set’ system with asymmetrical flow gaps creates highly efficient and cost-effective devices, whose performance per area (depending on the design) is up to 17% higher than conventional plate heat exchangers.
Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers
Gasketed plate heat exchangers consist of a set of adjoining embossed plates with apertures.
The plates are assembled at a 180° angle to each other, resulting in a flow gap. The gasket, which is mechanically secured or glued onto every plate, ensures that the flow gaps are securely sealed to the outside and from the second medium involved in the heat exchange.
The plate assembly is mounted in a frame and compressed with tightening bolts between the fixed plate and the movable plate.
The gaskets of a plate heat exchanger experience a normal fatigue process over the course of their service life. Depending on the conditions of use, the plate assembly can be re-tightened several times until the lower limit is reached.
The connections of the media involved in the heat exchange are on the fixed plate, but can also be on the moveable plate for multiple-pass flows. (see “Flow diagram”).
Our product range includes single and multiple-pass plate heat exchangers with heat exchange surfaces of up to 2,000 m².
New Generation of Heat Exchangers Plates
With a new type of embossing optimised by CFD and innovative features such as the bypass stop system, a new series has been developed here that is significantly more efficient than the previous units in this series. This makes the heat exchangers cheaper and more compact.
Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers
TPL - Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers
The exceptionally high heat transfer performance is achieved by means of diagonal media flow as well as special turbulence plates inserted into the flow gaps, a technology developed and produced exclusively by FUNKE. The turbulence plates are available in different versions, making the technical design very flexible. Each individual flow channel can be adapted to the specific application thanks to the modular design of the TPL. Another advantage of the TPL is its high resilience, as the surface soldering makes it possible to achieve a significantly higher level of safety under stress compared to the spot soldering used in conventional brazed plate heat exchangers. Stress conditions in the heat exchanger caused by differences in pressure or temperature, for example, can be absorbed significantly better thanks to the surface soldering of the TPL. TPL can be used universally with different media. Small sizes with low space requirements are possible for media with higher viscosity thanks to the high heat transfer of the powerful TPL. The optional extended end plates also facilitate the installation of the already very compact units.

Oil-/Air-Cooling Units
Funke has a comprehensive standard range in the oil/air cooler sector, which covers numerous mobile and stationary applications.
This includes, in the first instance, the Okan 2.79 cooler series, which can be adapted to suit a wide range of customer requirements due to its modular design. For example, special designs are available for marine and offshore applications, or for installation in areas where there is a high risk of explosion.
The Okan E series is also available. The Okan E series oil/air coolers have been specially developed for standard applications in the industrial hydraulics sector which do not impose any special requirements on the design of the oil/air cooler.
In addition to extensive documentation, 3D models of all oil/air coolers are included as step files.
Design and function
The basic element is an aluminium cooler in bar and plate construction, as shown below. The oil tubes are fitted with turbulence elements to guarantee optimum heat transfer.
The fan mounted behind the cooler operates as suction in standard mode. The slat shape, fan blades and motor power are aerodynamically and thermodynamically coordinated to achieve a high degree of heat dissipation.
