It originated in the early 19th century when Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, began having tea and snacks in the afternoon to tide her over between lunch and dinner, which in high society was served quite late. Today, afternoon tea usually consists of a selection of finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, cakes, pastries, and, of course, a choice of teas. Marie’s Tea Room in the heart of Gravesend is a family-run haven perfect for celebrating special occasions like Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day, and Christmas, as well as hosting unique experiences such as craft workshops, cupcake decorating, truffle making, wreath making, psychic nights, poetry evenings, and book clubs. We hand-blend our own loose-leaf teas, served alongside light bites, main plates, and indulgent afternoon teas featuring delicately cut sandwiches, buttery scones, and sweet treats. Our warm, community-focused atmosphere extends next door to Marie’s Emporium, where visitors can explore a curated selection of global teas, eco-friendly self-care products, and quality gemstones. With a Produced in Kent status, a passion for creativity, and a personal touch inspired by Marie herself, we offer more than just tea—we provide a memorable experience that blends flavour, craft, and connection.

Our Games & Crafts Party with Afternoon Tea is a fun-filled celebration combining creative crafts, exciting games, and a tasty afternoon tea of sandwiches, crisps, cakes, and drinks—customisable for dietary needs. Priced at £18.95 per child (under 12) with an optional sweet cone for £2.95, the party requires a minimum of 10 children and runs Monday–Saturday at 3:30 pm or Sundays at 2 pm, with other times available on request. Extra time is £30 per 30 minutes, and a £100 deposit secures your booking—email tearoom@mariesmail.co.uk to arrange your event.

Tuck into a beautifully presented selection of finger sandwiches and sweet delights, all served with unlimited tea or coffee, of course.

A minimum of 10 guests is required, with two hours reserved for your celebration. Need a little longer? Add an extra 30 minutes for just £30.

To secure your booking, a £100 deposit is required.For out-of-hours gatherings, our “Hire with Afternoon Tea” package is available from £400, including up to 16 full afternoon teas.

Marie’s Tearoom is excited to invite talented local artists to take part in our unique Tea Room Takeover! Each month, we feature a new artist, giving you a chance to showcase and sell your artwork in a relaxed, cosy atmosphere. Here’s what you get:

• A whole month to display your work: Your work will be displayed for a minimum of 25 days, or the entire month, for our lovely customers to admire and purchase.
• Sales Opportunities: We’ll handle all the sales, and you’ll keep 75% of the profits. Our 25% commission covers protective packaging, bags, and transaction fees – no extra costs!
• Promotion: Your art will be featured on our social media, and we’ll display an artist bio or blurb next to your pieces to highlight your inspiration and talent.
• Exclusive Evening Event: During the month, we’ll host a special evening event where you can meet customers, talk about your work, and celebrate your art with the community!
