It is said that a settlement has been in the area of what is now known as Orpington since Stone Age, with the first recording of a name being “Orpedingetune” meaning “Orped’s farmstead’ in 1038 when the area was given as a gift.
St Mary Cray, now a suburb of Orpington, was once a more important area, as there were regular markets in the Cray, which also contained paper mills and bell foundry − whereas Orpington was deemed to be a small village.
Orpington Station was first built in 1868 and was expanded in 1904 which in turn encouraged house building in the area, thus creating residential areas now known as Crofton and Broomhill. With the transfer from the status of a district council in the county of Kent, Orpington became a part of the London Borough of Bromley in 1965. The station is located just over 13 miles from Charing Cross.
