All Tapped Out – The End of Typewriter Production As Last Typewriter Firm Closes It’s Doors

03 May 2011

We have sadly learned today that the last ever producer of brand-new typewriters, Godrej and Boyce, have finally shut their doors and gone out of business.

It joins the likes of the floppy disk, the 8-Track and the VCD on the list of previously loves and lost items.

However if there’s one thing you can say about the typewriter that you can’t say about the others on that list is that none of them were loved as much as the typewriter was.

There is a grand sense of romanticism to the typewriter. Poets have written masterpieces there, epic novels have been thrown out one after the other and then there’s the sound of clacking that could only be identified as the noise of the typewriter, whether you thought it was annoying or loved ever last tap.

Amongst the faithful, typewriters will live on and will probably never die, but at the end of the day typewriters are obsolete. In fact, they’re two generations behind what is currently obsolete and makes use of two other items that are now potentially obsolete if we just let them be; paper and ink.

I’ve already written about the wonders of the paperless office, see our other articles for that, but the great-grandchild of the typewriter, the modern computer, in its many forms and shapes, is now and should continue to be the leader of type based documents and that includes those that are printed. The simple fact is that printing and ink are not a necessity anymore and there is no better time to point this out than now.

Going paperless, or even just converting the majority of your files to digital is not as painful as you might believe that it is and the time it’ll save you in the long run, as well as the efficiency and extra funds it will provide will be mind-boggling.

It’s sad that the beloved typewriter is now unofficially dead, but we live in a world that is constantly changing and the typewriter held out for a very long time and outlived many of its usurpers.

But it’s time that in business we move ahead and continue to move on into a time where we have more time. Where efficiency is better and without limits. The future that the business world needs.

The time will come at some point when we will read stories like this about ink and paper, but they will certainly not be as affectionately missed because of better solutions and a better future for the business office.
