Digital Leads In Breaking News - Popularity of Digital Newspapers Soars

02 August 2011

In recent weeks, the New York Times has reported that over 250,000 people have subscribed to its paid digital service since it was launched.

If 250,000 sounds like a lot, that's because it is. According to the official New York Times Wikipedia page, circulation of the paper is in the region of 850,000. That an astounding 34% of all readers are now subscribed digitally.

There can be a number of reasons for this surge in digital desire, the first being price with the lowest weekly cost of a subscription coming in at just $3.75, or around £2.50. This is astonishing value for money. The second reason is, of course, the rise in popularity of the digital reader such as the iPad and the Amazon Kindle. If you are a regular rider of public transport in any major city in the world you will see at least one person using either a smartphone, iPad or Kindle reading the latest news in one hand, with a Starbucks in the other, even here in the UK.

The combination of a modern cutting edge technology and an unbeatable price is a compelling arguement and one that sets a precedent for the future of distribution and digitisation. We are already aware of the popularity of eBooks, but not until recently have we learnt of the surging popularity of online subscriptions to newspapers and magazines. But with there being so much news out there on the web it makes you wonder why anyone would subscribe to...well, anything these days, but there a number of good reasons.

The wonderful thing about the internet is that anyone can write anything about anything, which is also its downfall. Professional and great writers still write for the likes of the New York Times and any number of other fantastic niche publications, which just makes it seemingly worth paying for rather than seeping through 50 blog posts to find what you're looking for.

Digitisation has come a long way in the last few years and is now looking head on into the future. Going digital is the way forward and, as seen with the case of the New York Times and so many other publications which now boast digital subscriptions, digital is king. Even in the workplace, digital is starting to overshadow the use of paper with organisations making their entire collection of files and paperwork digital in order to improve efficiency and save time.

The world we live in now is about efficiency, time and with information being thrown at us from billboards, the internet and everywhere else your eyes find themselves, the mind sometimes just wants simplicity and that's seemingly what you get when everything is digital. Everything is in one place, with easy access whenever you wish. The rising popularity of digital editions of newspaper and magazine publications is not about modernising at the forefront, but more about making our lives easier, simpler and less jumbled. This is why offices across the world are also taking advantage of becoming digital and in some cases even going totally paperless if they can.

The breaking news might be old news, but it's never been more relevent; digital is king, and you can send that to print.
