Transformers & Rectifiers Ltd. Successfully Completes In-Line Testing of 6.5MW Traction Transformer Rectifier Unit
Transformers & Rectifiers Ltd. is pleased to announce the successful in-line testing of our 6.5MW 33kV/1500VDC Traction Transformer Rectifier Unit at the prestigious IPH/KEMA Laboratory in Berlin.
The in-line tests included comprehensive short-circuit assessments, conducted to validate the rectifier design in line with rigorous technical standards. The primary objectives were to assess current division unbalance, potential diode failure due to transient junction temperature rise, and excessive mechanical stress resulting from the rate of rise and magnitude of fault current. These tests were carried out in accordance with BS EN 50327 (Traction Converters) and BS EN 50329 (Traction Converter Transformers for combined transformer-converter equipment).
Details of the Testing Procedure
Two distinct short-circuit tests were conducted to ensure the highest levels of safety and performance:
1. Pre-Applied Short-Circuit Test:
• Short-circuit power was applied to the primary side of the equipment with a pre-applied short-circuit through a test shunt connected across the DC terminals.
• The Transformer, Busduct, and Rectifier were connected in line, with the Rectifier DC output terminals shorted via the test shunt.
2. Post-Energisation Short-Circuit Test:
• A short-circuit was applied to the pre-energised equipment by closing a traction track feeder breaker connected directly across the DC terminals.
• The Transformer, Busduct, and Rectifier were connected in line with the traction track feeder breaker, which included full protection facilities to ensure system integrity.
Reflecting on this achievement, Paul Glasscock, Sales Director at Transformers & Rectifiers Ltd., commented: "Successfully completing these demanding tests demonstrates our dedication to delivering products that meet the highest industry standards. The 6.5MW Traction Transformer Rectifier Unit is a testament to our engineering expertise and the commitment of our team to providing reliable, high-performance solutions for the rail industry."
The 6.5MW Traction Transformer Rectifier Unit has now successfully joined our portfolio of accredited equipment, alongside our 3MW, 4MW, and 6MW Transformer Rectifier Units.
This achievement reinforces our position as a trusted provider of innovative and high-performance solutions for traction power systems. Our products continue to demonstrate superior reliability and resilience in demanding applications.
