Businesses have always relied on suppliers, vendors, and service providers to keep operations running. These organisations looked after each some of each others data on paper, without too much concern that it would be stolen. Over time, advancements in technology and globalization made supply chains more "just-in-time" efficient, interconnected, and data driven. When supply chains used private networks in communicate data there was little worry about external interference.
As these processes evolved into using Internet-based networks (primarily to save money), the risks grew exponentially. Cybercriminals world-wide could easily exploit vulnerabilities within these complex networks, targeting third-party vendors as an entry point to larger organizations.
It is essential for businesses of all sizes to understand these threats and implement strong security measures, because cyber criminals look for a way in, and they will be more likely to find it lower down the supply chain.
