Woking footbridge installed during 26-hour possession

Spanning the main London to Southampton railway line, a single-span footbridge has been installed during a 26-hour possession.

Replacing an older and recently demolished structure, the 32m-long footbridge links Woking Golf Club with the town’s St John’s Lye district.

Working on behalf of Network Rail and main contractor Balfour Beatty, Adey Steel fabricated and supplied the 26t structure to a nearby site in three sections.

During the possession, the three sections were transported by rail for over one mile and through 14 sets of points to its final location. It was then assembled into a complete structure and lifted into place using a Kirow 810 rail-mounted crane.

Robert Hall, Operations Director said “This was a great job which was delivered quickly to fit in with a rail possession and demonstrates the importance of teams collaborating to ensure a successful and safe installation”
