street works

Pragmatic Consulting

With demand rising across construction and utilities sectors, Pragmatic Consulting delivers accredited NRSWA training to ensure legal compliance, safer working practices, and a more qualified streetworks workforce.

As infrastructure projects expand across the UK, from fibre broadband rollouts to EV charging installations, construction and utilities companies are under pressure to ensure their workforce is properly qualified for work on public highways. In response, Pragmatic Consulting is ramping up delivery of NRSWA training for both operatives and supervisors, helping companies meet statutory requirements under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.

NRSWA certification is mandatory for anyone involved in digging up or reinstating the highway, as well as for monitoring streetworks. Without the correct qualifications, awarded via a Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR) card, workers may be restricted from carrying out essential duties, and employers could face serious compliance risks.

“Councils and principal contractors are increasingly enforcing stricter standards. Having up-to-date streetworks certification isn’t just a box-ticking exercise anymore; it’s central to legal and operational success,” says Jo Niblett, Managing Director at Pragmatic Consulting.

Pragmatic offers NRSWA training at its Stoneleigh and Wakefield Training Centres. Course modules include signing, lighting and guarding, excavation and reinstatement, and avoiding underground services, essential competencies for anyone working in or around the highway.

With over 2.5 million streetworks registered annually in England and Wales, and infrastructure demand still rising, the need for qualified workers has never been greater.

Pragmatic Consulting continues to support the sector by providing targeted training that keeps people safe, projects compliant, and reputations intact.
