Forming aperture with trailer rig to accept seating pot

22 July 2025 | Castle & Pryor Ltd

AGL Installation at Stansted Airport

Airfield Ground Lighting, or AGL's, ensure the safe passage of aircraft around Airports, MOD facilities and Airfields around the UK and the World. These provide visual guidance for pilots and other airport users during, takeoff, landing, taxiing operations and airfield maintenance, especially in low visibility conditions.

How did we fit AGL’s at Stansted Airport?

Working at the remote end of Stansted airport, we recently installed 19nr AGL’s.

We formed the apertures to accept the AGL’s seating pots using a trailer mounted drilling rig fitted with our unique double cutting head core. This allows for the precise hole depth to be achieved whilst forming an annulus around the seating pots required for the introduction of the setting material. These were then broken out and debris removed using on site road sweeper.

Once all the holes were completed the seating pots are attached to the seating pot jigs. These allow for adjustment when installing the seating pots to ensure they are set at the correct level and orientation. The seating pots are then installed using a quick set bedding material. Once in place the level of the seating pot is adjusted which is dependent on location within the airfield. The orientation of the seating point is then adjusted using a sighting scope. This is attached to the top of the seating point and aligned with a given point provided by the works engineer, ensuring very precise positioning of the AGL, which is critical to successful installation.

The seating pots are then left to set before the jigs are removed. Fast curing grout is then introduced around the seating pot filling the annulus to the existing surface level securing the seating pot in place.

The AGL light units are then installed and connected to the network by specialist Airfield Electrical Contractors.

Due to the efficient processes and sequence of work we have adapted for this installation along with the fast cure materials utilised, the area can be operational and returned to service typically within 1-2 hours after installation, reducing the impact of the day to day activities of the airfield operator.
