Fern Diplodocus Wins Prestigious Structural Engineering Award

As we approach the festive season, it’s the perfect time to celebrate remarkable achievements and what better example than the Fern Diplodocus at London’s Natural History Museum, which has just been awarded the Ingenious Structural Solution Award by the Institution of Structural Engineers 2025.

This remarkable project was brought to life by the collaborative creation  of Structure Workshop and FACTUM ARTE, and their vision truly merits the award . Macalloy supplied  the precision-engineered tensioning bars that run the entire length of the structure. These bars provide the critical stability and flexibility needed to support the sweeping, organic form of the Diplodocus, ensuring both strength and elegance.

The Fern Diplodocus is more than just a structural achievement, it’s a fusion of art, science, and engineering that captivates visitors from around the world. Its design required innovative thinking to balance aesthetic ambition with technical feasibility, and the result is a breathtaking centrepiece that celebrates both natural history and modern ingenuity.

This award recognizes not only the technical brilliance behind the project but also the collaborative spirit that made it possible. From concept to completion, the Fern Diplodocus stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when creativity and engineering expertise come together. Well done to Structure Workshop and FACTUM ARTE for this award.
