How to Tell If Your Euro Cylinder Is Anti-Snap: A Belfast Locksmith's Guide

Lock snapping is one of the quickest ways a burglar can get through a UPVC or composite front door. It targets the euro cylinder, the part of the lock your key goes into. A standard cylinder has a weak point in the middle, and with the right force it can be snapped in seconds, exposing the mechanism behind it.

The good news is that checking your own lock takes less than a minute.

1. Look for markings on the cylinder face

Open the door and look at the end of the cylinder, where the key goes in. Anti-snap cylinders usually carry a kitemark and a rating. TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond markings are the ones to look for. If there's no marking at all, it's very likely a standard cylinder.

2. Check how far it sticks out

If the cylinder sticks out more than a few millimetres past the handle or escutcheon, it gives a burglar something to grip. A correctly sized cylinder should sit close to flush.

3. Check the brand

Well-known anti-snap brands include Brisant Ultion, Avocet ABS and Mul-T-Lock. If you don't recognise the name or can't find one, it's worth getting it checked.

What to do if your lock isn't anti-snap
